this morning spoke volumes as the nation and newtown remember what happened one week ago today. only rain drops heard during this moment. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to 20 young children, 6, 7 years of age and seven adults gunned down for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 a.m. eastern time, that is the precise time that first call came in. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put flags at half-staff, even parts of the internet went silent this morning. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut state sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary. in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are not wired right for some reason. >> since we passed the brady law, the assaults are down. we need to keep working on this, and there are lots of different solutions. >> just because the republicans may not be runn

in newtown which the associated press actually labelled the number one story the year for the first time beating out a general election and the story that captivated us for the sadness and the tragedy of it all? >> well, i think the nra and. wayne lapierre was speaking to the constituency of the nra. he was careful not to say anything that would offend his own membership. secondly when he was speaking i was hoping that he would speak on behalf of the nra in a calm, constructive and sort of common ground way. but he missed his shot in this talk. instead of emphasizing some kind of positive proposal, he did towards the end of his talk mention this model school shield program which at least is an idea that can be discussed but instead of going right to that and offering it in constructive way he spends the first 15 minutes of his talk bashing the media, talking about the familiar whipping boys of violence in movies and in video games, et cetera and as you pointed out there's no particular correlation between those things and actual violence in society. >> professor, back to your point i wan
